Getting Started
The Deste web version needs no installation: which browsers it runs in, what happens the first time you open it, and the status of the desktop version.
There’s nothing to install for the Deste web version. Just open destepdf.com; the app downloads into your browser and runs there.
Requirements
- A current browser that supports WebAssembly and WebGL. The interface is drawn with WebGL; if WebGL is turned off or there’s no hardware support, the app won’t open.
- It works in Chromium-based browsers such as Chrome and Edge, on desktop and on Android.
- Firefox and Safari (including iPhone and iPad) haven’t been tested enough yet. If you run into problems, write to info@destepdf.com.
- Enough memory: there’s a limit of 250 MB per file and 400 MB in total for documents open at the same time.
First launch
- While the page opens, you see a short loading screen as the app’s files download. On later visits the browser cache speeds this up.
- A welcome card explains that your documents never leave your device. Close it with ✕ or Continue. If Don’t show again is checked, it won’t appear again; to see the card again, click the How does Deste work? link when no documents are open.
- Choose files with Add Files, or drag and drop them onto the window.
That’s it. There’s no account, sign-up or extension.
On a phone
The same address opens on a phone too; when the screen gets narrow, the toolbar simplifies and the commands on the right move into the ⋯ menu. Add Files opens the phone’s file picker. Lists scroll with your finger; to drag a document or a page, press and hold it for half a second.
Desktop version
A desktop version of Deste for Windows and Linux is in development and can’t be downloaded yet. It adds itself to your system as a virtual printer and prints to your real printer; see Capturing prints. When it’s ready, the download link will be announced on the Deste page.
