Privacy
What happens to your documents in Deste: processing in the browser, time-limited storage on your device, and what the server does and doesn't see.
Deste’s approach to privacy fits in one sentence: your documents never leave your device. This page explains how that’s done and where its limits are.
Documents are processed in your browser
When you open destepdf.com, what your browser downloads is the app itself: the interface, the PDF engine and the compression engine, written in Rust and compiled to WebAssembly. Opening a document, drawing pages, merging and compressing are done by this code, on your processor.
- Your documents, their contents and what you do with them are never sent to any server.
- The app contains no document-upload, analytics, tracking or advertising code.
- There’s no account or sign-up; we don’t know who you are.
What’s stored on your device
While history is on (7 days by default), the documents you open and a small record of your workspace are kept only on this device, in the storage the browser sets aside for this site (IndexedDB and local storage), and are deleted automatically when the period ends. You can change the period or turn history off in Settings; when it’s off, nothing is stored and documents go away with the tab. Your Don’t show again preference and your history period are also kept in local storage.
On a shared computer, someone who opens the same browser can see the history; on such a device, turn history off or clear it when you’re done. See History and resuming work.
What the server sees
The app’s files are served through Cloudflare. To deliver the page to you, Cloudflare processes your IP address and browser information, and logs which app file was requested when, along with the status code. The site owner can see these request logs. Your documents aren’t in these requests, because they’re never sent. Cloudflare’s own privacy policy applies to this processing.
Desktop version
In the desktop version under development, everything also happens on your computer: the virtual printer listens only on this computer, captured documents and history stay on your own disk, and nothing goes out to the network.
